it was always like that, check any decade and it had weirdly same sound of all mass pop songs produced. I think 80's pop was specially terrible about that. Pop is a safe music made for mass production. And while most eras had very colorful rock scene, the main problem today is that even rock music is becoming stale, mass produced and consumed and simply sounds same (metal too).

Please. This is the most musically liberal time ever. Remember when the king used to ban the tritone org "devils chord"? Or when all music had to be in Gregorian chants? No. You just only listen to the music made you appeal to everybody so ofc it sounds generic because it's made to be easy to listen to. Imagine if every radio station played hard bebop constantly.
