I really like Japan, but their school system is terrible. Most of the time they only learn for standardized tests. Which is one of the reasons for their terrible english speaking skills, because they mostly learn phrases for the tests. Some schools even have rules to decides which hair colors are legal for students and which not. So if you're a foreign student with red or blonde hair, you would have to dye them black or dark brown.

And at the end of the day, suicide rates in japan are higher than anywhere else in this world. Which is partly because children are pressed into a mold even before they even start school. and their education system doesn't help either. Anyway, how do you want to teach a child manner and develop character when the mothers name is Karen?

Schools shouldn't have to teach manners. Manners are taught at home, and it begins well before the children enter school.

Great idea. Last time my country (Germany) thought children the social rules they wanted them to believe in it really boosted individuality.

hahaha, seriously? ok they have a lot of strict rules but that doesn't mean they are the most well mannered, table manners for one... also, their school system has the highest suicide rate in the world so...yeah

日本語だいすきでも, Scandinavia probably beats out Japan in all areas. The rest of the world could learn a great deal from Japan. But, their culture is *too* collectivist, so the individual suffers. Meanwhile, the West is *too* individualist, so the collective suffers. Scandinavia has pretty much the best balance in the world, so we could all learn from them the most. Japan is a wonderful country. But it's got some heavy issues revolving around collectivism. Those manners, they're good, but they also teach the child that they don't matter in contrast to the group, leading to a lot of issues. Just more *quiet* issues, usually. Suffering in silence. I'm not against the idea, though. It's a good idea. I still remember in 2nd grade, I thought I was really good at math. Then this other girl got a reward for being the best. It demotivated me quite a lot, and I stopped caring about math. As a 7 year old, maybe measuring them on merits is more counterproductive than productive.

I think it also has to do with the quality of teachers, in my country to teach in schools you can either study primary or secondary education in university or study in pedagogy institutes, and usually the ones that study in those institutes tend to be crappy teachers because they couldn't even pass a university admission test (university is 5 years and those institutes 3 years).
